In the evenings, after fixing food for her kids – Rhys (8), Will (12) and Gemma (14) – she’d often fall asleep for an hour or so on the living-room couch, waking up to the sound of a tennis-ball thud against the side wall. Rhys was convinced he was going to make it professional, and he withdrew books from the library – old yellow books with crouching men in old-fashioned shorts holding wooden rackets on the covers – to hone his skills. And at night, as Gemma and Will did their homework, or half-killed each other over who got to use the computer, Rhys played tennis against the outside wall.

The guy at the tennis club told Amy that Rhys needed one-on-one training sessions that cost £16 an hour, maybe two or three times a week, to stand any chance of making it. But the £4 Friday group sessions were enough of a stretch money-wise. Amy began to wonder if it was cruel to encourage him when she knew how it would all end. But she’d made a vow to bite her tongue, to not become her mother. And Rhys was still young. It didn’t seem right to submerge him in the language and logic of lifelong letdowns.

Anyway, he’d learn soon enough.
